How many IT and cloud providers serve York?

Compare the Cloud lists 182 IT and cloud providers serving York, a larger total than the size of the city alone would suggest. York is a compact city within easy reach of Leeds, Hull and the wider North East, and nothing in a directory listing says where a supplier actually works from, so ask any shortlisted firm where its engineers are based before assuming local cover.

Why does York have more listings than its size suggests?

York's listing count is high because a directory records where a provider works rather than only where it is registered, and York sits inside a large and well connected regional catchment. The practical effect for a buyer is that a shortlist drawn from that catchment will include suppliers who have never attended a site in York. Ask any candidate where its nearest engineers are actually based and how often they travel into the city.

Does it matter that most York providers work remotely?

For cloud hosting, security monitoring and data work, delivery happens over the internet and the distance to York makes no difference to the service. Location matters in York for a more specific reason than in most cities: a large number of buildings in the centre are listed or sit within a conservation area, so cabling, wireless coverage and equipment installation carry constraints that a supplier unfamiliar with the building stock will underestimate. Ask whether the provider has worked in listed premises before.

What should a York organisation ask about data and analytics work?

Data analytics and cybersecurity are the largest categories among York's listings, and both are bought badly more often than they are bought well. For analytics, establish who will own the finished models and dashboards, whether the work is a one off build or an ongoing service, and what it costs to run once the project team leaves. For security, ask what the provider actually monitors and who responds out of hours, because monitoring without a response arrangement leaves the alert sitting unread until Monday.
