How many IT and cloud providers are there in Cheltenham?

Compare the Cloud lists 61 IT and cloud providers working in Cheltenham and Gloucestershire, a smaller market than the major cities but a distinctive one. Security, cyber and infrastructure work make up a larger share of Cheltenham's listings than they do in most towns of comparable size, which is a direct consequence of GCHQ being based in the town and a cyber industry having grown up around it.

Why is Cheltenham's provider list weighted towards security?

Cheltenham's provider base skews towards security because the town has been a centre of government signals and cyber work for decades, and people who leave that world frequently start or join firms nearby. For a commercial buyer that concentration is genuinely useful, since the local market holds more penetration testing and security consultancy capability than the population would predict. It also means some suppliers are configured for government contracting and may not be a natural fit for a small commercial engagement.

What should a buyer check about security clearance?

Security clearance is held by individual people rather than by companies, and it takes months to obtain, so a supplier stating that it holds clearance is answering a different question from the one worth asking. Ask how many cleared individuals the firm employs, at what level, and whether any of them would be assigned to your work. If clearance is a genuine requirement of your contract, confirm it names people rather than the organisation.

What does a smaller local market mean for a Cheltenham buyer?

With 61 listings, Cheltenham offers a narrower local choice than a large city, which matters for on site work and barely matters for anything delivered remotely. Widening the search to Bristol, Gloucester and Swindon adds substantial capability within a comfortable drive, and for cloud, monitoring and consultancy the supplier's location is irrelevant to the outcome. Reserve the insistence on local for work that needs somebody physically present.
