How many IT providers are there in Plymouth?

Compare the Cloud lists 50 IT and cloud providers in Plymouth and across Devon. Plymouth sits a long way from the nearest large technology clusters, which changes the arithmetic on anything requiring an engineer to travel and makes the question of where staff are physically based more important than it is in a city region.

What does national coverage mean in the South West?

National coverage frequently means a partner network or an engineer dispatched from Bristol or Exeter rather than staff employed in Plymouth. Ask where the nearest engineer physically sits and what the attendance time is measured from that location, because a four-hour target counted from a depot three hours away is not a four-hour target in any useful sense. Ask also who the subcontracted partner is, since you will be relying on them.

Does distance affect cloud services and remote support?

Distance has no effect on cloud services or remote support, which reach Plymouth exactly as they reach anywhere else with a working connection. What distance affects is the cost and timing of physical events, including hardware replacement, installation, site surveys and any incident that cannot be fixed down a wire. Buyers should therefore separate the remote elements of a contract, where the field is national, from the on-site elements, where it is local.

What should a Devon business keep on site?

A business far from its supplier should hold spare kit locally, particularly the items whose failure stops work, such as a firewall, a switch and a laptop or two. Agree with the provider what is stocked, where it lives and who is permitted to swap it, and make sure at least one member of staff can follow instructions to change a device. A courier or an engineer takes longer to arrive in Devon, and the plan should assume it.
