IT Companies in Sheffield

How many IT providers are there in Sheffield?

Compare the Cloud lists 125 IT and cloud providers working in Sheffield and South Yorkshire. Sheffield's economy is built on engineering, advanced materials and two large universities, and its provider base reflects that, with infrastructure, data and security work more prominent than the marketing and ecommerce services that dominate some city markets.

What should a Sheffield engineering firm ask about compute?

Engineering and materials businesses in Sheffield often need short, intense bursts of computing power for simulation, modelling or analysis rather than a steady load, and that pattern suits cloud far better than an owned server that sits idle between projects. Ask a prospective provider whether it has run this kind of workload before, how it controls spend when a job runs longer than expected, and whether licences for the modelling software you use can legally move to the cloud, because software licensing is where these projects usually stall.

How should a Sheffield business protect design and research data?

Design files, test results and research data are commercially sensitive long before they become intellectual property, so the controls that matter are access, retention and who can copy data out. Ask which of your people can export data in bulk, whether the provider's own staff can read your files, and how access is removed when a contractor or a research partner finishes. Anyone collaborating with a university should also check what the collaboration agreement says about where shared data may be stored.

Should a Sheffield business choose a specialist or a generalist provider?

A generalist managed provider covers the everyday estate of laptops, email, backup and helpdesk, and for most businesses that is the right foundation. A specialist earns its place where the technical problem is genuinely unusual, such as engineering software, laboratory equipment or a production system with its own support contract. Many Sheffield businesses end up with both, in which case agree in writing which supplier owns an incident when nobody is sure whose system failed.
