Exotec puts Skypod warehouse robots into two Japanese distribution centres

Exotec has commissioned two new Skypod systems in Japan, for food distributor Mitsubishi Shokuhin and industrial distributor Trusco Nakayama. Both were deployed with IHI Logistics Industrial Systems.

Mitsubishi Shokuhin's system sits in its new Food Service Distribution Centre in Soka, which handles almost 13,000 product references across food, alcoholic beverages and professional supplies. Exotec says it is the first Skypod implementation in Japan's food distribution sector. The customer's aims were shorter operator travel distances, better picking efficiency and automated ambient-temperature operations, amid labour shortages.

Trusco Nakayama's Skypod is fully operational at Planet Aichi, the group's largest logistics centre, which covers about 89,000 square metres and is expected to hold more than one million SKUs in the coming years. The deployed system includes nearly 32,000 bins, 37 robots and four picking stations, automating fulfilment of tools, consumables, safety equipment and industrial supplies.

Romain Moulin, CEO of Exotec, said: “Japan is one of the world’s most demanding and innovative markets when it comes to logistics.”

Exotec, a French company, says more than 50 brands including Carrefour, Decathlon and UNIQLO use its systems at more than 200 locations worldwide.
