Recovering a cloud application after a destructive attack usually means rebuilding it by hand, or relying on tools that stitch the environment back together with bespoke methods. Cohesity says it now has a validated alternative: HashiCorp, an IBM company, has confirmed interoperability between Cohesity Data Cloud's cloud rebuild capability and Terraform Self-Managed, the self-hosted platform for defining cloud infrastructure as code.
The approach treats an organisation's reviewed and approved infrastructure-as-code files as the blueprint for recovery. Terraform recreates the declared configuration, and Cohesity Data Cloud restores the latest usable application data from backup. Cohesity argues this returns an application to a trusted state, rather than to a copy of production that may already include an attacker's changes.
Cloud rebuild reads the Terraform code to map each resource and the order it should be restored in, backs up both the code and the application data over time, and then rebuilds step by step. For databases such as Amazon RDS, a guided multistep process walks administrators through reconnecting the restored database. Because infrastructure and data can be backed up on separate schedules, the tool shows how far apart in time the chosen code version and data backup are.
Cohesity cited its 2026 UK Cyber Resilience Report, a Vanson Bourne survey of 400 security and IT decision-makers. It found 88% of organisations said their recovery plans would need moderate or significant changes to cope with AI-assisted attacks, and only 2% said their plans are ready today.
Vasu Murthy, Cohesity's chief product officer, said teams need both layers to bring an application back.
Tyler Lynch, Outbound CTO for Automation at IBM Software, said customers had asked how to recover using Terraform and its state, not only build a new environment.
Cloud rebuild is available now in Cohesity Data Cloud Enterprise Edition. Existing Data Protect and NetBackup customers can upgrade to get it.
