Contrivian says Lighthouse 2.0 removes the need for network failover

Contrivian has released version 2.0 of its Lighthouse software platform, which keeps several network links active at once instead of holding a backup link in reserve for failover.

Lighthouse monitors WAN connections and moves traffic away from impaired links across fibre, broadband, 5G and low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite. Version 2.0 widens it from managing individual sites to orchestrating enterprise networks, covering multiple sites, carriers and technologies in one platform. It supports private point-to-point and point-to-multipoint networks, including Layer 2 Ethernet services across different carriers, with segmentation and secure access between sites.

A carrier-independent public IP address stays in place across every connection, so VPNs and application sessions survive as traffic moves between networks. The platform also integrates with Starlink and other LEO providers, giving visibility of satellite links next to terrestrial ones.

Grant Kirkwood, Contrivian's founder and CEO, said: "We believe failover is failure." His argument is that by the time a network fails over, users have already felt the outage and VPNs have dropped. Tom Daly, Principal Technologist at Contrivian, said: "Lighthouse separates network intelligence from the underlying infrastructure."

Lighthouse launched in 2024 and won the Gartner Eye on Innovation Award for Communications Service Providers in the Americas. Version 2.0 builds on five years of enterprise networking software development from Big Network, whose technology is now combined with it. It is available now to enterprise and public sector customers, in physical and virtual deployments, and integrates with Contrivian NorthStar for visibility and Contrivian Constellation for multi-constellation LEO services. A webinar on the launch is scheduled for 1 December 2026.
