Ride-Sharing with BlaBlaCar’s new MariaDB Databases

The ride-share economy is booming, and one of the pioneers of the industry has just announced a partnership wtih MariaDB. BlaBlaCar is using an open source database cluster to meet its scalability and availability needs, and the partnership with MariaDB is allowing them to access their data more effectively.

With 25 million members across 22 countries, notably India and most recently Brazil, BlaBlaCar certainly is amassing a lot of data to deal with.

Mass adoption of the BlaBlaCar service has revolutionised the long distance transport market. BlaBlaCar isn’t intended to get you home from the pub on a Friday night, it targets drivers and riders looking to travel between cities, it’s an alternative to the coaches and trains that we have relied on for so long. BlaBlaCar now carries 10 million passengers per quarter and its application is used by over seven million visitors per month. Those are pretty crazy statistics for a social driven ride-share app, especially considering most of us won’t smile at fellow passengers on the train!

BlaBlaCar’s growth means they must ensure the global scalability of their data management platform. The capability of their service is crucial and requires a scale-out architecture. Nicolas Blanc, the Head of Platform Architecture at BlaBlaCar says improving the service for users of the application, as well as for the development teams, and simultaneously meeting his marketing teams’ needs are challenges he knows well.

Blanc said, “Our needs are evolving rapidly, and our database solution must ensure high performance and total availability while at the same time allowing us to quickly and flexibly acquire new data sources. MariaDB is an ally thanks to its flexible and scalable design.”

In an environment which includes nearly 250 physical servers and a hundred virtual machines spread across two data centres, the flexibility of MariaDB’s architecture and the MariaDB Enterprise Cluster™ gives BlaBlaCar complete control of the consistency, reliability and scalability of its database applications.

At BlaBlaCar, some tables handle more than one million logs per day and the data archives’ volume exceed 1.5 Terabytes. The storage engine chosen was InnoDB which allows BlaBlaCar to manage the data’s consistency and integrity.

Using the MariaDB Enterprise Cluster allows BlaBlaCar to have and maintain a highly available and scalable architecture without complex IT operations.

Serge Frezefond, Cloud Architect at MariaDB, says: ‘‘We are very proud to have BlaBlaCar as a customer… BlaBlaCar is one of the world’s leading sharing economy companies who trust MariaDB with truly business-critical data.’’

The sharing economy is a very interesting progression both technologically and socially for our global society, it’s nice to see that technologists are working to make the sharing economy successful in the long term.
