Welcome Helper is the first AI agent released by Leicester since the university announced a collaboration with Microsoft in June 2026, becoming one of the first UK institutions admitted to Microsoft's Frontier University programme and granting Microsoft 365 Copilot access to all enrolled students and staff. The agent draws on information from the university's Welcome website, which brings together new starter checklists, arrival guidance and event details.
The launch sits within a broader set of commitments Leicester is making around AI adoption, employability and student experience. From September 2026, Leicester will guarantee at least 100 hours of employer-informed, work-related learning on every eligible undergraduate degree.
The Citizen app already provides students with access to timetables, calendars, news, events and support services. Welcome Helper is available from 21 September 2026.
For higher education IT and digital experience teams, Leicester's deployment illustrates a practical entry point for Microsoft 365 Copilot in student-facing services: a narrowly scoped agent built on a defined content source, reducing the risk of hallucination while delivering measurable onboarding value. Leicester's AI agent launch comes at a time when UK universities are testing both the practical and ethical limits of AI tools in student-facing settings.
