A global study of 12,021 IT decision-makers, including 2,011 in the UK, found that 87% of British IT leaders worry their careers are at risk if their organisation's AI efforts fall short. Only the US, at 88%, recorded a higher share. Freshworks' Cost of Complexity Report 2026 attributes the anxiety to a structural problem: UK organisations consistently deploy AI more slowly, lose more budget to complexity, and remain in pilot phases longer than counterparts in India, Singapore, and other markets studied.
Half of UK organisations report deployment windows of six to eight months. The UK carries the lowest share of sub-three-month deployments of any country in the study. A third of organisations (35%) are still in pilot phase, and 36% say they use AI only for a handful of specific processes — both figures sit above the global average. UK businesses also report losing the highest share of any surveyed market's AI budget to complexity, with many indicating losses of up to 25%.
The NHS provides a sharper illustration of what complexity actually costs. The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, a specialist cancer centre supporting more than 4,000 staff, described its IT system before modernisation as an "absolute beast" — costly to maintain, difficult to update, and reliant on external consultants for what should have been routine requests. Since implementing Freshworks' Freshservice and Freddy AI Copilot, half of all IT support tickets now arrive through a self-service portal, up from zero, with two full-time staff freed from inbox triage.

The broader picture the research describes is of an enterprise AI market where UK organisations are structurally disadvantaged by accumulated technical debt, fragmented tooling, and a reliance on expensive external resource — problems that compound rather than resolve as AI projects expand. The 87% career-anxiety figure reflects IT leaders who understand the stakes well enough to internalise them personally.
