Avanade survey finds 80% of UK firms call themselves AI-advanced but only 17% have redesigned how they operate

Avanade's Build Beyond Limits AI Reality Report points to a gap between how mature UK organisations say they are with AI and what they have changed. Some 80% of UK respondents describe themselves as established, advanced or AI-first, yet only 17% say their team has fundamentally redesigned its operating model around AI. The global study surveyed 3,600 business decision-makers across 11 markets, and three quarters worldwide admit their organisation overstates its AI maturity.

Ambition is modest. Only 8% of UK respondents say creating new operating models, revenue streams or businesses is their main intended use of AI over the next 12 months, against 27% focused on optimising existing processes and 20% on embedding AI in existing products and services. Some 69% believe AI investment is still aimed at incremental gains.

Returns are thin. Some 61% of UK businesses admit AI has yet to deliver financial returns that justify the spend, and 65% say they have not formally calculated and reviewed AI ROI with finance or senior leadership. Only 18% report transformational growth in revenue generation and cost reduction, while 23% report transformational gains in operational efficiency and customer experience.

Respondents also describe their own overstatement. While 67% believe they are ahead of their peers, 71% admit to portraying themselves as more AI-mature than they are. Some 90% see AI-native competitors as a threat, and 84% agree their organisation must authorise AI initiatives faster.

"Deploying more AI tools doesn't necessarily mean an organisation is becoming more competitive," said Ben Beath, Chief AI Officer at Avanade.
