Assured Data Protection launches CleanRoom SCAN to check Rubrik backups for malware before recovery

Assured Data Protection has launched CleanRoom SCAN, a managed service that scans isolated copies of backup data with several security engines to find hidden malware before a restore. The aim is to avoid reinfecting production systems during recovery. The service is available now, initially for Rubrik-protected environments running VMware, where it checks replicated backup data held in Assured's own infrastructure.

Assured's argument is that no single security tool catches everything, since each engine relies on its own threat intelligence, detection techniques and update cycles. Running several engines against the same isolated data should find more than one endpoint platform would, and the scan puts no extra load on production. Customers receive regular verification of clean recovery points, and Assured alerts them if it finds malware or indicators of compromise that their existing controls missed, so investigation can start before recovery begins.

The company said finding the last clean point has been one of the most time-consuming parts of cyber recovery, with recovery times ranging from days to weeks. Future development is expected to cover more environments and use cases. CleanRoom SCAN builds on Assured's existing managed data protection, disaster recovery and cyber recovery services, which include support for Rubrik, Nutanix and Zerto.

Nik Grove, Field CTO at Assured Data Protection, said: "Effective cyber resilience and recovery isn’t just about having backups. It’s about knowing which backups are safe to use". Alvaro Gonzalez, Senior Vice President of Product and Go-to-Market, said: "During a ransomware event, the longest and most expensive part of recovery is often finding the point at which the environment was last clean".
