AIoT connections forecast Wireless Logic

To mark World IoT Day on 9 April, connectivity management provider Wireless Logic has drawn attention to Transforma Insights forecasting that the number of AIoT connections, devices combining IoT connectivity with AI processing, will grow from 1.4 billion at end-2023 to 9.1 billion by end-2033.

The six-fold increase reflects the accelerating convergence of two technology stacks that were largely separate until recently. IoT has historically focused on connecting devices and transmitting data; AI is now being layered on top to drive analysis, anomaly detection and, increasingly, autonomous decision-making at the edge.

The IoT can be a fragmented and complex landscape of networks, devices, cloud environments and enterprise processes. As industry pressure mounts for enterprises to innovate, they must implement AI more effectively. Organisations now require explainable and globally scalable solutions that deliver transparency and measurable business outcomes.

Practical applications

The practical applications span several domains. AI and machine learning can analyse real-time usage, performance and anomaly data to optimise connectivity policies, predict issues and enable proactive remediation across device lifecycles. Security is another focal point: without continuous monitoring, breaches in IoT deployments can cause significant damage if they go undetected, and AI-driven anomaly detection can flag irregularities in real time.

The scale of data involved underlines why AI processing is becoming essential rather than optional. Global data volumes reached an estimated 181 zettabytes last year, with IoT devices contributing a substantial and growing share.
