Commvault announced the solution on 9 September, built on two existing platform technologies: Commvault Cleanroom, which creates isolated recovery environments, and Threat Scan, which continuously checks backups for malicious content. The combination means the standby AD copy is not just fast to activate but verified clean before it goes live.
The problem it addresses is specific. Identity systems are now a primary attack target: ransomware operators disable Active Directory first, because every enterprise application and user depends on it. Full AD forest recovery, the traditional response, can take days. Identity synchronisation into alternate systems adds complexity and reinfection risk. Pre Recover sidesteps both by maintaining a ready-to-use copy rather than building one after the attack.
Rajiv Kottomtharayil, Chief Products Officer at Commvault, said: "Identity is foundational to every enterprise application, user, and business process. Commvault has already made significant progress reducing identity recovery times from weeks to hours, and now we are extending that progress toward near-real-time availability."
Availability is staged: early access is due in the coming months, at which point enterprise AD customers will receive the feature as part of their existing licence, including a lite version of Cleanroom. Distribution goes through Commvault's partner ecosystem.
The product sits inside Commvault's Identity Resilience portfolio, a grouping the company has been building as identity-layer attacks become a standard phase of enterprise ransomware campaigns.
