173 Companies Became Unicorns in 2026 as AI Investment Reshapes Global Startup Valuations

The pace of unicorn creation has never been faster. BestBrokers, which analysed the Crunchbase Unicorn Board alongside PitchBook data, counts 1,830 private companies worth at least $1 billion worldwide, collectively valued at $8.41 trillion. The United States remains the dominant force with 938, worth $5.04 trillion, but the spread is changing.

Among 2026's 173 new unicorns, 102 are US-based (59% of the year's total), while China produced 25. The UK ranks third with 13 new entrants adding $21 billion in combined valuation to Britain's startup ecosystem. The country's most valuable new unicorn is AI lab Ineffable Intelligence, which reached a $5.1 billion valuation after raising $700 million in a Series A — making it the second most valuable new unicorn globally this year.

The UK's total unicorn cohort now stands at 80, collectively worth $299 billion. Fintech group Revolut, valued at $75 billion, remains the country's most valuable private company. Germany (47 unicorns, $142.2 billion), France (34, $88.5 billion) and Canada (38, $97 billion) round out Europe and the G7 picture.

The 2026 class is not uniformly AI. Among new entrants, Belgium produced two cybersecurity unicorns (Keyrock and Aikido Security, combined $2.1 billion); Spain two in deep tech (aerospace company Xoople and quantum computing startup Multiverse Computing, $2.7 billion); France's additions include defence startup Harmattan AI ($4.5 billion combined with AMI Labs). Healthcare, fintech, space and robotics all feature alongside the AI cohort.

Alan Goldberg, lead data analyst at BestBrokers.com, says the widening spread reflects a structural shift: "The global startup landscape is broadening, giving more countries a chance to produce the companies that will shape the next decade."

The data is drawn from Crunchbase and PitchBook as of August 2026.
