SumUp Partners with Sage to Help UK Small Businesses Comply with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

SumUp, the global financial technology platform for small businesses, has announced a strategic partnership with Sage, the leader in accounting, financial, HR, and payroll technology for small and mid-sized businesses, to support UK self-employed individuals and landlords in meeting the upcoming Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD for IT) requirements.

Starting 6 April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 will need to maintain digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC. The SumUp and Sage integration aims to make this transition as seamless as possible.

Embedded Accounting for Everyday Commerce

Through the partnership, SumUp merchants will gain access to Sage's accounting capabilities directly from the SumUp ecosystem, enabling them to track income and expenses, generate compliant reports, and submit quarterly updates without switching between multiple platforms.

Small businesses shouldn't need to become tax experts to stay compliant. By embedding Sage's accounting tools into the SumUp experience, we're removing friction and helping our merchants focus on what they do best — running their businesses.

Why This Matters

  • MTD for Income Tax begins 6 April 2026 for those earning over £50,000

  • Digital record-keeping and quarterly HMRC submissions become mandatory

  • An estimated 780,000 UK self-employed individuals and landlords are affected in the first phase

  • Penalties for non-compliance will apply from the outset

Making Tax Digital is one of the biggest changes to tax reporting in a generation. Partnering with SumUp allows us to reach the small business community where they already operate, making compliance achievable rather than daunting.

Gordon Stuart, Sage

The integrated solution is expected to be available ahead of the April 2026 deadline, with early access beginning in the coming weeks.
