Dropbox has announced plans to acquire Tigris Data, a globally distributed, S3-compatible object storage platform built for AI workloads, and unveiled DBX Agent Cloud, a storage and data layer for companies building AI applications and agents. No financial terms were given for the deal.
DBX Agent Cloud starts with standalone S3-compatible object storage that companies can buy on its own and use with tools and applications built for Amazon S3. Dropbox plans to add filesystem and content-processing capabilities next. The company said the offering is designed to sit alongside the clouds, compute providers and developer platforms where customers already run applications. Tigris, founded by former Uber engineers, lets developers store and access data across clouds without vendor lock-in or egress fees.
"The value of AI depends on the content and context it can work with," said Ashraf Alkarmi, co-CEO of Dropbox. Ovais Tariq, co-founder and CEO of Tigris, said: "Our customers depend on Tigris to keep their applications running, and their needs keep growing."
The announcement also covers the core product. Customers can describe an outcome, and Dropbox will identify the relevant content, propose a plan and carry out supported actions once the user approves it. Tasks include finding information, summarising folders, comparing versions, editing PDFs and images, transcribing recordings, trimming video clips, and organising or renaming files in bulk. Dropbox works within existing permissions, keeps a record of what it does and lets users undo supported actions.
Users can switch between supported AI models during a session and work on their Dropbox files from ChatGPT, Claude and Muse without uploading content repeatedly. The new experience has already rolled out to more than 70,000 teams, starting with eligible Standard and Advanced teams in the US, UK and Australia, in English first. Broader availability is planned for 2027.
