DE-CIX Mexico grew 400% in five months. The FIFA World Cup is the next test.

Since DE-CIX Mexico launched in 2025, traffic at the exchange has grown by more than 400% in the opening months of 2026, reaching peak levels close to 300 Gigabits per second. DE-CIX Dallas, the larger end of the link, crossed the 2 Terabits per second threshold in the past year, supported by 30% growth in peak traffic and double-digit growth in connected networks.

The World Cup adds urgency to what is already a fast-moving picture. FIFA anticipates 6 billion viewers for the 104-match tournament, the majority watching on screens: televisions, apps, and streaming services. Guadalajara, Mexico City, and Monterrey will host matches, and Mexican networks have been seeking direct access to US content, cloud, and carrier ecosystems that are not yet locally available.

The upgraded Mexico–Dallas link connects DE-CIX Mexico's distributed infrastructure — spanning multiple data centres in Mexico City and Querétaro — to DE-CIX Dallas and the wider North American ecosystem, including exchanges in Chicago, Houston, New York, Phoenix, Richmond, and Seattle. The extended reach allows Mexican ISPs, CDNs, and cloud providers to peer with US networks without multi-hop routing.

DE-CIX Mexico connects close to 30 networks and is positioned as the second-largest internet exchange in Mexico. In its first months of operation in 2025 it processed 24 Petabytes of traffic.

"This levels the playing field for Mexican Internet service providers to provide their end customers with a seamless viewing experience for streaming live sports events, as well as playing e-sports and consuming other high-definition content," said Omar Vega, Country Sales Director at DE-CIX Mexico.

The event itself is the largest World Cup by participating nations: 48 teams, 16 cities, three host countries. Demand for match tickets exceeded supply by a factor of 100 — 500 million requests for 5 million tickets — which will push the bulk of engagement to digital channels, and with it the traffic volumes that internet exchanges are already preparing for.
