Veeam released Data Platform v13.1 this week, expanding hypervisor coverage to 14 platforms and introducing malware scanning for NAS environments and cloud workloads—changes the company frames as a response to a recovery confidence gap: 90% of organisations say they can recover from a cyber incident, but fewer than one in three ransomware victims have actually recovered all their data.
The release adds out-of-the-box support for six new hypervisor platforms: Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization, Sangfor aSV, XCP-ng, Citrix XenServer, VergeIO, and Platform9. Veeam describes the expansion as addressing two pressures simultaneously—new infrastructure adoption and organisations moving off VMware in response to pricing changes. The Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization plug-in is expected in Q3; the remaining five platforms are available now.
On the security side, the update extends malware scanning coverage to NAS storage and adds cloud threat detection for Azure workloads. It also includes Active Directory Forest Recovery for identity restoration following cyber incidents and adds post-quantum cryptography alignment with current NIST standards, alongside hybrid FIPS support. The aim is to let teams validate recovery points before restoring—detecting contamination at the backup layer rather than discovering it after recovery.

The same release also covers enterprise application protection additions: purpose-built support for EPIC EHR, Db2 on Windows, and Oracle with incremental merge, as well as an Application Backup Repository for custom applications. The positioning here is consolidation—enterprises managing mission-critical workloads across healthcare and finance can run them under one platform rather than maintaining separate point tools for each.
Alongside the platform release, Veeam announced Veeam Data Cloud Vault Archive, an archival-class cloud tier designed for older backup data that organisations need to retain for compliance but rarely access. The service offers immutable, encrypted long-term storage with automated tiering from Veeam Data Cloud Vault, giving customers control over data residency and encryption key ownership.
