UN's AI for Good Summit Convenes in Geneva in July Alongside First Global Dialogue on AI Governance

Organised by the International Telecommunication Union together with more than 50 UN partners and co-convened by the Swiss Confederation, the summit will draw policymakers, researchers, and industry figures to Palexpo convention centre for four days of talks and demonstrations.

The governance dialogue, meeting on 6-7 July just before the summit opens, is convened by the UN General Assembly and facilitated by Secretary-General António Guterres. It represents the first time the General Assembly has convened a dedicated forum at this level on AI rules. Together with the World Summit on the Information Society Forum running throughout the same week, the schedule creates what the ITU describes as an unprecedented gathering on international AI cooperation.

The confirmed speaker list is long and high-profile. On the policy side, it includes ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Rwanda President Paul Kagame, Estonia President Alar Karis, and UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany. Yoshua Bengio and Stuart Russell, both prominent voices on AI risk, are also confirmed, alongside industry figures including Brad Smith of Microsoft, Werner Vogels of Amazon, and Marc Benioff of Salesforce.

The 20,000 square-metre expo will host more than 200 demonstrations across humanoid robotics, autonomous vehicles, brain-computer interfaces, AI healthcare applications, quantum systems, and tools for disaster response.

The confluence of governance talks and technology showcases reflects a broader moment: countries across the world are drafting national AI strategies while deploying increasingly capable systems, and the question of what international standards should look like remains open.
