Sage Period Review consolidates MTD client transaction data into one workflow for accountants

HMRC is now signing up the sole traders and landlords who still need to register for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. For accountants, that means a wave of clients arriving with scattered records across multiple tools. Sage has launched Period Review to address that workload spike, pulling transaction data from Sage Sole Trader and supported banking apps including Tide Accounting into a single review workflow inside Sage for Accountants.

The capability, announced at Accountex Manchester on 15 September, lets accountants and bookkeepers search, sort, bulk-correct and adjust client transactions without switching between tools. Adjustments and journals can be created and submitted from within the same period-by-period view.

Sage cites HMRC research showing that 86% of accounting and tax professionals expected to take on additional tasks to support clients through MTD compliance. Separately, Sage's own data found that 70% of sole traders did not feel confident about what MTD requires of them, a gap that accountants are expected to bridge.

"Accountants and bookkeepers are being asked to manage more information, for more clients, more frequently," said Lisa Ewens, SVP Product, Small Business and Accountants at Sage. "As HMRC begins signing up those who have yet to act, practices need a simpler way to bring client records into shape without creating an ever-growing administrative workload."

The practical case comes from Boffix Accountants, an early-access user. "Reviewing client records can involve moving between different systems, checking individual transactions and going back to clients when something does not look right," said Aaron Patrick, founder of Boffix. "Period Review brings that work into a much simpler and more consistent process."

Period Review is expected to reach eligible Sage for Accountants users in October 2026 following its Accountex demonstration. Tide Accounting is currently the only named banking app in early access; further financial management integrations are planned ahead of the next MTD wave.
