Nearly three-quarters of UK adults have no plan if their data ends up on the dark web

A survey of 1,000 UK adults by cybersecurity firm Bridewell found that 72% would not know how to respond if their personal data were found on the dark web—a knowledge gap the company says leaves millions exposed to identity theft and fraud at a moment when major breaches of retailers and public bodies are pushing compromised records into active circulation.

The awareness shortfall is steepest among older age groups. More than half of adults aged 35 and over said they would not know how to protect themselves if their data were exposed. Respondents aged 25 to 34 were the most confident: 46% said they would know what steps to take.

The survey arrives against a backdrop of significant recent breaches in the UK. The Department for Education disclosed that hackers obtained more than 600,000 records, including telephone numbers and email addresses. Marks and Spencer, Harrods, and The North Face also faced major cyber attacks in the past year, with The North Face confirming the use of credential stuffing—a technique that relies on usernames and passwords bought from previous breaches or the dark web—to access accounts.

Personal data sells cheaply on dark web marketplaces. According to Bridewell's research, basic personal details can be obtained for around £5, credit card information for approximately £8, and a scan of a driver's licence for £6. The low unit cost matters less than the volume: attackers combine records in bulk and re-sell them repeatedly, and the value rises when disparate records—date of birth, passwords, mother's maiden name—can be linked together into more complete identity packages.

When criminal actors do exploit compromised data, the consequences for victims can extend well beyond financial loss. Bridewell notes that fraudsters may use stolen data to access bank accounts or open new lines of credit in a victim's name, with many victims struggling financially and emotionally to recover their identity over an extended period.
