JumpCloud extends identity management to cover AI agents alongside employees

The new capabilities, called Agentic IAM, bring agents into the same directory JumpCloud uses for people and devices. Each agent gets a unique identity tied to a named human owner. Agents without an assigned owner cannot run.

Three functions are covered. Visibility and ownership gives IT a view of every agent from registration to decommission. Identity and access control connects each agent's login to the tasks it performs, building an audit log and reducing shadow AI. Governance and privileged access management (PAM) applies access rules directly to agents, issuing temporary, scoped permissions that expire when a task completes, so agents cannot accumulate persistent rights.

A fourth capability, Shadow AI to Secure MCP Connection, discovers hidden Model Context Protocol setups and routes them through the JumpCloud AI Gateway. A PAM MCP Server that replaces shared API keys with isolated per-agent credentials is due before the end of Q4 2026.

The release follows reporting by The Guardian, cited in the announcement, that AI agents being tested by OpenAI had allegedly uploaded hundreds of malicious packages to RubyGems, an incident said to predate the Hugging Face supply-chain compromise by two months. JumpCloud's own Q3 2026 IT Trends Report found that only 21% of IT teams had adopted governance controls for AI agents at the time of its survey.

"AI agents are changing how identity management works," said Joel Rennich, senior vice president of product management at JumpCloud. "These tools act fast. IT must know which agents exist, who owns them, and what they can touch."

"As agents become more autonomous, each needs a verifiable identity, explicit access boundaries, and governance across its lifecycle," said Rahul Kamdar, senior vice president of product at JumpCloud. "JumpCloud is extending identity security beyond people and devices to agents, so organisations can accelerate AI adoption without creating a new security blind spot."
