Datadog survey finds 94% of UK firms have moved AI past the pilot stage, but only 22% can see it all

Datadog's State of Operational AI in Europe 2026 report finds just 6% of UK organisations remain at the experimental or pilot stage, compared with 25% in both France and Germany. Yet only 22% of UK IT leaders report complete visibility into AI systems in production.

Across the three countries, AI now runs in around 29% of applications on average, and four in ten IT leaders say switching off individual AI-powered capabilities such as incident detection, infrastructure optimisation or code generation would significantly disrupt their business.

The costs and failures are visible. In the UK, 38% say AI costs have exceeded expectations, against 15% in France and 19% in Germany, and only 23% actively monitor and optimise AI usage and cost, compared with a European average of 38%. A third (34%) of UK IT leaders report customer-facing problems from AI failure or unexpected behaviour in the past year, 32% a security incident, and just 41% are confident they could detect an AI problem before it reaches a customer.

Looking ahead, every organisation surveyed expects to give AI unsupervised control over at least one high-stakes action within two years. In the UK, 29% expect AI to approve and execute financial transactions without human supervision. Across Europe, 26% expect it to make hiring, firing or other personnel decisions without human involvement.

Pejman Tabassomi, Field CTO at Datadog, said: “As AI moves from assistant to autonomous operator, the operational challenge changes completely.” He argued the answer is not to slow AI down but to build the visibility, security and guardrails that let organisations give it more responsibility without giving up control.

Censuswide surveyed 756 IT decision-makers at organisations with 1,000 or more employees that use AI, between 4 and 24 August 2026 in the UK, France and Germany.
