Commvault adds AI agent discovery and recovery to its endpoint protection offering

The capability, released on 1 October 2026, lets IT and security teams identify which agentic AI tools are installed across a device fleet, protect the configuration data stored locally, and restore that data if a machine is lost, damaged or replaced. It ships as part of an existing endpoint protection subscription rather than a separate SKU.

The use case it targets is increasingly common. IBM research cited by Commvault found 80 per cent of surveyed US office workers use AI in their roles, but only 22 per cent draw exclusively from employer-sanctioned tools. The gap between those figures represents a fleet of unmanaged agents accumulating prompt libraries, custom instructions and project context that conventional backup strategies do not reach.

Pranay Ahlawat, Commvault's chief technology and AI officer, put it directly: “Most organisations cannot tell you which AI agents are running on their employees’ machines, let alone recover the work inside them. We give IT and Security visibility into where these AI tools are installed, and a recovery path for the context employees have built inside them.” Discovery of OpenAI’s ChatGPT desktop app is available now. General availability for Claude Cowork, Claude Code and OpenClaw protection and recovery is expected in the coming months.

The new functionality sits under Commvault’s AgentRecover umbrella, which covers AI tool data alongside the connected systems those tools rely on. The company will demonstrate the capability at its SHIFT 2026 conference in Nashville.
