Cisco becomes Teleport's largest investor in push to retire static credentials from enterprise infrastructure

Cisco has made a strategic investment in Teleport, becoming the security company’s largest investor, in a partnership structured around what the two describe as Infrastructure Identity: a model that replaces long-lived secrets and password-based privileged access with short-lived, cryptographically verified credentials issued per task.

The investment is accompanied by technology integration and licensing agreements. The core argument is that traditional privileged access management tools were built for a world of human logins and credential vaults, and are poorly suited to environments where AI agents operate autonomously at machine speed — environments where a compromised long-lived credential can expose systems before a human team has time to respond.

Under the Infrastructure Identity model, an operator requesting access to a system receives only the privilege required for the specific task and for the duration of that task. No reusable secret is issued. Teleport brokers and records the session; Cisco’s network layer provides the infrastructure context that determines what access should be allowed.

Peter Bailey, SVP/GM of Security at Cisco, and Ev Kontsevoy, CEO of Teleport, described the objective in a joint statement: to move organisations from “fragmented, credential-reliant workflows to a unified model of Infrastructure Identity, a robust, cryptographic foundation that anchors secure identity to every human and machine action across the enterprise.”

The initial focus is privileged access for network and infrastructure administrators. The architecture applies the same model to AI agents, which Cisco and Teleport argue should receive scoped, time-limited access rather than inheriting broad standing privileges simply because they operate at speed.

The announcement arrives as enterprise AI deployments are expanding the attack surface: more autonomous actors with more access to more systems, operating faster than traditional monitoring and response.
