DE-CIX, the world's largest internet exchange operator by traffic volume, has connected MASS-IX — New England's primary carrier-neutral internet exchange — to DE-CIX New York through its IX Turnkey Connectivity programme. The result is a single-hop path between the Boston metro area and the largest internet exchange in the US Northeast, without the transport costs or latency overhead previously required to reach New York-based networks.
MASS-IX serves 70 or more networks across more than 12 data centres in the Boston market, with connected capacity of close to 3 terabits and peak traffic above 300 gigabits per second. DE-CIX New York, ranked third largest in North America, handled more than 5 exabytes of total traffic in 2025 and spans 40 or more data centres across the New York metropolitan area.
The first network to go live on the connection is TOWARDEX, a Boston-based infrastructure company whose Hub Express System operates as an open-access underground utility for the city's data centre networks. TOWARDEX founded MASS-IX in 2015.
For New England networks, the practical effect is access to DE-CIX's broader North American ecosystem — exchanges in Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, and Richmond, plus international connections to Europe and Latin America — routed via MASS-IX rather than requiring individual transport arrangements.
