Network video manufacturer Axis Communications has signed on as a founding partner in Palo Alto Networks’ Frontier AI Critical Defense Program, a newly created initiative that delivers virtual patches at the network layer while organisations wait for official firmware updates.
The programme addresses a specific pressure point at the edge. IP cameras, intercoms, and access control devices from Axis are deployed across government facilities, airports, and critical infrastructure sites where firmware upgrades often require maintenance windows lasting days or weeks. Frontier AI models can now identify and weaponise newly disclosed vulnerabilities faster than most organisations can complete those cycles, shrinking the exposure window to hours.
Under the partnership, Axis will coordinate with Palo Alto Networks to develop high-quality virtual patches — network-level signatures that block exploit traffic targeting a known vulnerability without touching the affected device. The protection provides air cover, allowing operations teams to validate and schedule a permanent software update without the risk of leaving the device exposed in the meantime.

Axis, headquartered in Lund, Sweden, employs around 5,000 people across more than 50 countries. The Frontier AI Critical Defense Program is open to other technology vendors.
