Serverless Computing

Function-as-a-Service and serverless platforms

Serverless computing is an execution model in which the cloud provider dynamically allocates compute resources to run individual functions or application components, charging only for the exact compute time consumed. Developers deploy code — typically as discrete functions — without provisioning, configuring, or managing the underlying servers. The infrastructure scales automatically in response to incoming requests, from zero to millions of invocations, and scales back to zero when idle. AWS Lambda, Azure Functions, and Google Cloud Functions are the most widely adopted serverless platforms, though the ecosystem extends to serverless containers, databases, and event-driven workflows. UK development teams and technology organisations are adopting serverless architectures to accelerate delivery and reduce operational overhead. Traditionally, deploying a new service required provisioning and configuring virtual machines, patching operating systems, managing capacity, and monitoring infrastructure health. Serverless removes this undifferentiated heavy lifting, allowing teams to focus entirely on business logic. For organisations under pressure to ship features faster, the productivity gains are material — development cycles shorten and time-to-market improves. Cost efficiency is one of the most compelling arguments for serverless. Workloads that are intermittent, event-driven, or unpredictable in volume — batch processing pipelines, API backends for mobile applications, webhook handlers, scheduled data transformation jobs — consume compute only when actively processing. Compared to always-on virtual machines or containers, the cost reduction for such workloads can exceed 80%. For UK organisations managing tight IT budgets, serverless can dramatically improve the unit economics of running digital services. Serverless is particularly well-suited to event-driven architectures, microservices patterns, and API-first application design. Functions integrate naturally with cloud-native services such as message queues, object storage events, and API gateways, enabling loosely coupled, scalable systems. The UK financial services and media sectors have been early adopters, using serverless for high-volume transaction processing, content delivery pipelines, and real-time data enrichment. Buyers should be aware of the trade-offs. Cold start latency — the brief delay when a dormant function initialises — can affect user experience for latency-sensitive workloads, though provisioned concurrency options mitigate this. Observability is more complex in serverless environments; organisations should evaluate vendor-native monitoring alongside third-party tools such as Datadog or Lumigo. Vendor-specific function runtimes and event source integrations introduce lock-in risk, and architects should consider portability through frameworks such as Serverless Framework or AWS SAM where long-term flexibility is a priority.

Why choose Serverless Computing?

Eliminate server management entirely and redirect engineering effort to business logic
Reduce compute costs by up to 80% by paying only for actual execution time consumed
Scale automatically from zero to millions of requests without capacity planning or intervention
Accelerate time to market with faster deployment cycles and reduced infrastructure dependencies

Appstrato

Appstrato: Platform-Led Delivery Appstrato is a platform-led delivery model I’ve developed and used across contract and partner engagements. It’s not a traditional consultancy — it’s a framework to help experienced practitioners deliver cost take-out, improve supplier performance, and enable fractional ITAM leadership where needed. We use it to streamline outcomes like: Value Assessment – What’s working, what’s wasted, what’s missing? Cost Take-Out – Licence rationalisation, SaaS reduction, contract negotiations and cloud ROI. Target Operating Model – Designing scalable, modern ITAM/FinOps functions. When it makes sense, this model supports flexible delivery — but it’s never positioned to compete with internal teams or existing vendors. It complements them. ️ Delivery — Without the Disruption This model supports the contract world and is about targeted value using a network of trusted experts — some of whom also operate under long-term client contracts. There are no rigid contracts, no licence resale, and no vendor commissions. Just clean, platform-backed execution that clients can trust. Recent Examples SSE – £7M+ in identified savings; increased audit readiness across multiple publishers. Allianz Group – Reduced annual spend by 15% while enabling a new FinOps framework. Currently Right now, Im focused on long-term contract delivery — but always open to collaboration where it fits. If youre exploring a cost take-out initiative, assessing your current suppliers, or need short-term ITAM leadership — feel free to connect or drop me a message. Alphalake Ai

Healthcare App Connector marketplace and workflow management platform for Ai and non-AI process automation and no-code integration. Built from modern enterprise orchestration methods and technology to make healthcare integration more simple, efficient and effective. Alphalake Services has worked with enterprises and healthcare organisations since 2019, supporting them to thrive as digital leaders, through custom solution delivery in digital automation, data integration, interoperability, workflow, AI, user design, and digital product development. Years of experience delivering Managed Services for healthcare and businesses in the UK, India and Europe led to our vision for more effective, scalable technology for healthcare, pioneering Hybrid Automation, a methodology for automation and integration that orchestrates no-code API’s and screen control to enable fast, robust and scalable optimisation. This in turn led to the licensing of Connectors for Apps in healthcare through our first-of-its-kind orchestration layer for AI and automation across healthcare’s workflows, bringing APIs, Apps, LLMs and Bots into a single workflow management tool and self service interface. > Health Providers and digital health innovators build, test, deploy (and adapt) faster. > Cost/time-predictable implementations. > Maintenance of evolving interoperability becomes easier. > Control data access to AI functions/workflows. > Visibility through workflow log history makes compliance reporting easy. > No-code App Connectors reduce cost/complexity for delivery teams. > Human creativity and talent shifted from out of date admin/clerical work to being business productive. In healthcare, we return humans to human care (the patient). In business, we return humans to human service (the customer). #RiseoftheHumans
