Serverless Computing

Serverless computing is an execution model in which the cloud provider dynamically allocates compute resources to run individual functions or application components, charging only for the exact compute time consumed. Developers deploy code — typically as discrete functions — without provisioning, configuring, or managing the underlying servers. The infrastructure scales automatically in response to incoming requests, from zero to millions of invocations, and scales back to zero when idle. AWS Lambda, Azure Functions, and Google Cloud Functions are the most widely adopted serverless platforms, though the ecosystem extends to serverless containers, databases, and event-driven workflows. UK development teams and technology organisations are adopting serverless architectures to accelerate delivery and reduce operational overhead. Traditionally, deploying a new service required provisioning and configuring virtual machines, patching operating systems, managing capacity, and monitoring infrastructure health. Serverless removes this undifferentiated heavy lifting, allowing teams to focus entirely on business logic. Cost efficiency is one of the most compelling arguments for serverless. Compared to always-on virtual machines or containers, the cost reduction for such workloads can exceed 80%. Serverless is particularly well-suited to event-driven architectures, microservices patterns, and API-first application design. Functions integrate naturally with cloud-native services such as message queues, object storage events, and API gateways, enabling loosely coupled, scalable systems. The UK financial services and media sectors have been early adopters, using serverless for high-volume transaction processing, content delivery pipelines, and real-time data enrichment. Buyers should be aware of the trade-offs. Cold start latency — the brief delay when a dormant function initialises — can affect user experience for latency-sensitive workloads, though provisioned concurrency options mitigate this. Observability is more complex in serverless environments; organisations should evaluate vendor-native monitoring alongside third-party tools such as Datadog or Lumigo. Vendor-specific function runtimes and event source integrations introduce lock-in risk, and architects should consider portability through frameworks such as Serverless Framework or AWS SAM where long-term flexibility is a priority.
